SUBARU OF INDIANA AUTOMOTIVE WINS GOVERNOR'S WORKPLACE SAFETY AWARD

Campaign to reduce slips, trips and falls contributed to 80% reduction from prior year

Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) was awarded a Governor’s Workplace Safety Award (GWSA) for Education and Outreach during a ceremony at the Indiana Safety and Health Conference on Wednesday.

“Providing a safe working environment for our associates is a cornerstone of our business,” said Scott Brand, senior vice president of administration and quality. “I’m proud of our safety team’s tireless efforts to reduce injury risks, along with their impressive results.”

The annual Governor's Workplace Safety Awards recognize companies based on best practices for eliminating workplace injuries and illnesses, and salutes those who have made safety and health a top priority. Companies in the Education and Outreach category have demonstrated excellence in the development and sharing of safety best practices within the organization.

SIA was recognized for a 2019 awareness campaign that featured balance and posture exercises to reduce slips, trips and falls. Each month featured a custom-made video, newsletter, poster and table tents that were displayed across the plant. The campaign contributed to an 80% reduction in related injuries from the prior year.
“With an incident rate approximately 90% below the OSHA national average for automobile manufacturers, 2019 was a record year for safety at our company,” said Brand. “We always strive to be the safest automotive plant in the U.S.”

SIA previously won a GWSA in 2015 for Innovation, in response to a program that allows associates to easily document and track workplace safety concerns. Since the program was implemented in 2012, more than 80,000 improvements have been made.

SIA is Subaru’s only manufacturing facility outside of Asia. More than 6,000 associates build the Ascent, Impreza, Legacy and Outback models for North America. Since beginning production in 1989, the plant has increased its annual production of vehicles from 67,000 to a projected 410,000 in 2020.
